Prof. Mineo Kimura

15 November 1946 - 02 February 2008

Graduate School of Sciences

Kyushu University

Fukuoka, Japan

Early last year on February 2nd we lost a friend and colleague with the passing of Prof. Mineo Kimura. Prof. Kimura enjoyed a distinguished and international career in theoretical atomic and molecular collision physics. An obituary was recently posted on the on-line edition of Physics Today highlighting some of his accomplishments (http://www.physicstoday.org/obits/notice_405.shtml).

Due to a committed interest in international scientific cooperation, Prof. Kimura was the principal organizer for the 2006 US-Japan Symposium on Collision-Induced X-ray Emission and Antimatter Physics (http://www.cfa.harvard.edu/~hrs/JaXrAm.html) which was held at Tokyo Metropolitan University. Before the end of the 2006 meeting, he proposed a second joint US-Japan meeting on collision physics which eventually evolved into the current workshop. Up until his death, Prof. Kimura was actively engaged in the planning of the workshop and without his initial involvement, this meeting would not have occurred.

The organizers of this workshop wish to dedicate this meeting to the memory of Prof. Mineo Kimura.
